This mad in fresh from combat.  He reflects on his duty and experiences.  He's come through alive and weary although the bandage indicates that he was wounded.  He leans on the staff revealing his exhaustion.  The green pastures behind him show that although his current situation is grim he will come through it with a deeper experience and knowledge.
