The lantern symbolizes lighting a path through the darkness.  The old man stands on the mountain top where he can see the world in every direction.  The staff represents intuition.  The snow symbolizes a cold and cruel world but the old man rises above it.  He is wisdom gained through life experience.  The gray robe represents an advanced age.
