Commentary on the Planetary Hours

It should be no secret that there are twenty-four hours in a day. What's not commonly known (except by those with Occult knowledge), is the fact that there are forces by which the hours are influenced. As each day of the week has a ruling planet, so too do the hours. The days and hours should be observed for your rites of Magick, which can greatly influence your success or failure. There are seven planets of antiquity. These seven planets are the foundations of Magick. Each planet rules one day of the week, and in turn, each planet rules a specific hour, respectively. The days of the week follow in this order...

Sun   -   Sunday
Moon   -   Monday
Mars   -   Tuesday
Mercury   -   Wednesday
Jupiter   -   Thursday
Venus   -   Friday
Saturn   -   Saturday

As for the hours which are governed by the planets, the first hour of each day reveals the planet which controls its influence, and the planets fall in order, repeating this cycle, for every hour of every day. It's a great responsibility for the Occultist to correctly understand the planetary hours in order to properly use them in Ritual.  Below is the formula I've familiarized myself with for determining planetary hours.  The minute/decimal chart is my own idea which is easier than counting the minutes on a clock.

Step One   -   Determine the rising and setting time for the Sun.  Click here.
Step Two   -   Convert both times to a decimal with the chart below.
Step Three   -   Add twelve hours to the setting time.
Step Four   -   Subtract the rising time.
Step Five   -   Multiply by sixty.
Step Six   -   Divide by twelve.
Step Seven   -   Subtract the remainder from 120 for night hours.

:02   .03   :17   .28   :32   .53   :47   .78
:03   .05   :18   .30   :33   .55   :48   .80
:04   .06   :19   .31   :34   .56   :49   .81
:05   .08   :20   .33   :35   .58   :50   .83
:06   .10   :21   .35   :36   .60   :51   .85
:07   .11   :22   .36   :37   .61   :52   .86
:08   .13   :23   .38   :38   .63   :53   .88
:09   .15   :24   .40   :39   .65   :54   .90
:10   .16   :25   .41   :40   .66   :55   .91
:11   .18   :26   .43   :41   .68   :56   .93
:12   .20   :27   45   :42   .70   :57   .95
:13   .21   :28   .46   :43   .71   :58   .96
:14 .23 :29 .48 :44 .73 :59 .98
:15   .25   :30   .50   :45   .75   :00   1.0

In case I lost you I'll give an example so that you may have a better understanding.  January 1st, 2001 in Las Vegas saw the sun rise at 6:52 a.m. and set at 4:37 p.m.  52 minutes is converted to .86.  37 minutes is converted to .61.

So there are 48.75 minutes for every planetary hour of the day.  To figure out the night hours subtract the day hour from 120.  In this case the number of minutes is 71.25.  You can see from this example that the night is longer than the day.  Day and night are equal only twice a year during the equinox.  With enough practice this should become simple to understand.  Now let's figure out how the minutes fall into hours.  We know that the day starts at 6:52 a.m.  Add 48.75 minutes.  If the number goes above 60 then subtract 60 minutes.  In this example...

  00:52 a. m
  48.75
  100.85
  -       60
  00:40 a.m.

If the first hour starts at 6:52 a.m. then the second hour will start at 7:40 a.m. and so on until the twelfth hour.  Be aware that if you don't have to subtract 60 minutes then the hour is the same as the previous one.  For example, 4:09+ 00:48=4:49.  If you have to subtract 60 twice then that means you skip an hour.  Figure out the entire twenty-four hours. This is done to ensure that your math is correct.  You may, however, be off by a minute due to this decimal but this is taken care of by rounding up or down accordingly.  It's the simplest method to use.  There are too many numbers to juggle around.

Let's assume that we were going to work a ritual on January 1st, 2001 which landed on a Monday, the day of the Moon and our chosen time for that day was 10:30 a.m.  According to the chart below that hour would belong to Saturn.
