The article which I planned on posting this month was pushed back due to world events. On August 24th people in the field of Astronomy gathered from around the world under one roof to debate one question. Is Pluto a planet? It was on this day that 250 people from around the world came to the conclusion, although not unanimously, that Pluto should be demoted into a new class of Dwarf Planets. With the recent discovery of a planet further than originally thought possible which scientists called 2003 UB313 this began the initial debate about whether or not Pluto was really a planet. At first I didn't agree with this debate until I did my own research and followed the news articles written about this subject. Originally it was thought that a planet was a round solid or gaseous object that orbited a star. A pretty basic concept as far as science goes. Other objects similar to Pluto have been found in our solar system that which, if Pluto remained a planet, would also be known as planets. Future generations may have lived with the knowledge of having a 50 or 60 planetary system. Here's my own definition of a planet.
1. A body (large or small) which orbits a star
by definition is a planet.
2. A body encompassing it's own gravity by definition is a
planet.
3. A body (solid or gaseous) circular or oval by definition is a
planet.
4. A body capable of producing weather by definition is a
planet.
5. Any body in motion which orbits another will be classified a
moon by definition.
6. Any Moon which is capable of producing it's own weather is
still classified a moon by definition.
The etymology for the word Planet means "to wander." By this definition that would imply all things in the universe are planets including stars. Common sense in the science community is lacking. Now here's the part that made me grin. Astrologers will be the last people to acknowledge that Pluto is no longer considered a planet and so will continue to use it in their charts. Others may claim that they knew Pluto wasn't a planet all along. I never used Uranus, Neptune or Pluto in my own system of Magick so the change doesn't affect me. The ancient systems of Occult never included these planets so I followed their example including when I used my own Astrological charts. I'm surprised that people in the Occult community have been silent about this topic. Pluto's moon, Charon, was also classified as a dwarf planet along with Ceres. On the morning of August 25th we woke up to an eight and three dwarf planetary system. The media didn't go crazy over this. I doubt that even 10% of the Earth population even know what was going on in the Universe...and life goes on...
