The Witches' Broom

By every standard, the broom is the best known tool of the Witch, but what is it really and what is it's purpose? Of course, every myth would have you believe that the Witch would use her broom to fly by the Devil's delight, but does the Witches' broom go beyond this? Well, I've never met a witch who used her broom for flying, nor have I flown myself by such means.

It's purpose is much simpler than historical myth would have you believe. Like all of the tools used in Occult practice, the broom is also symbolic. It's been used to sweep away all unwanted energies from ritual work. It's also a joining of the masculine and feminine. The male is represented by the shaft and the female is represented by the bristles. United, the broom is a conjunction of forces used in ritual, especially in fertility rites. Some people may have even hid their wands by making them look like brooms. The broom is also called a besom. There's a tradition in Wiccan handfasting (marriage) in which the bride and groom leap over the besom. This is to ensure fertility and bless the couple with many children.
