Much the same way that people argued over the chicken and the egg, people have disagreed on which came first: the God or the Goddess? Does it really matter? Currently, in our society and modern day of living, the God is more dominant than the Goddess, throughout much of the world. Most modern day Pagans worship the Goddess as being more important than the God, but honestly, they should both be of equal balance. There was once, virtually, an unknown war which carried on for many generations. This war involved people who worshipped the God, as opposed to those who worshipped the Goddess.
Well, to understand which came first, we have to always view Magick through reality and logical intuition, as I call it. Think back to those days when the ancient people were hunters and gatherers. The ancient pagans were as nomads, and oftened wandered the land. Hunting was a valuable skill, which could not be without. As wanderers, there was no need for agriculture, hence, no need for the Goddess archetype to come into the minds of those people.
As hunters, the land was often wild and untamed. The God was invoked to ensure a rewarding hunt. We give thanks for the food upon our table, much the way the ancient Pagans gave thanks for a bountiful hunt. The ancient people often draped themselves in the fur of the beast they hunted to invoke that spirit and to mimick the God in ritual play to intensify the need for a good hunt.
Later, when the ancient people decided to settle in a single land, that's when agriculture came about, and the people learned to tame the land, as they had once tamed the wild hunt. Along with agriculture, came the Goddess. It was her need to fertilize the land and make the crops grow. The sun and moon were observed during this period, and the ideas of divinity grew as the people came to understand the land and nature around them. From this understanding, we can easily see that the God came before the Goddess.
